Training Programs

The MacMillan Center makes community and equity a priority at all levels of research. We believe that when people of various backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives work together in an inclusive and equitable environment, we all gain new and valuable perspectives that otherwise would have been missed. Our scientific teams are an interdisciplinary group of investigators and collaborators, and we aim to increase new perspectives within the program by implementing outreach and training efforts that support a pipeline of researchers in biological, computational, biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences through our MacMillan Postdoctoral Fellowship, Summer Internship, and Early Career Development Program.

Summer Internship Program

The MacMillan Center Summer Internship Program is an intensive, 8-week, paid training program for current undergraduate students to receive hands-on mentorship from assigned mentors within our research laboratories and scientific groups as part of the NYGC’s Summer Internship Program. Interns have access to NYGC’s Faculty, Technology Innovation, Technology Development, and Production Sequencing Labs as well as the Computational Biology, Research Computing, and Software Engineering teams, resulting in a unique opportunity to gain experience, training, and exposure to state-of-the-art genomic technologies and analytical methods in a highly integrated, multidisciplinary environment. This allows all MacMillan Center interns to tailor their projects and training to their specific interests, while learning how to navigate the interface of academia and industry in genomic science and gain exposure to the administration and operation of a large, interdisciplinary research program.

Early Career Development Program

The MacMillan Center Early Career Development Program was a full-time 2-year training program for students that have completed their undergraduate degree. These trainees were hired as part of NYGC’s Early Career Development (Post-baccalaureate) Program, receiving exceptional scientific training and research experience, leveraging NYGC’s strengths in genomics, computational biology, technology innovation, and clinical genetic testing. Beyond scientific experience, program participants were offered various mentorship, programming, and enrichment opportunities that introduced them to different career paths in the academic, public, and private sectors.

MacMillan Postdoctoral Fellows Program

We are excited to launch the MacMillan Fellows Program in 2026, generously funded by The MacMillan Family Foundation through the MacMillan Center for the Study of the Non-coding Cancer Genome. MacMillan Fellows will be regarded as future leaders in cancer biology and non-coding genomics; pioneering new discoveries and therapies to improve cancer biology, diagnosis, and treatment.

Each selected postdoctoral researcher will be a MacMillan Fellow for up to 2 years. During their fellowship term, the MacMillan Center will cover full salary and provide an annual stipend for conference travel and independent research funds. Successful applicants will be announced at the MacMillan Center’s Annual Meeting, present at an NYGC-wide meeting, and be invited to a celebratory lunch with program leadership.
